Nursing Home Negligence in Los Angeles

Heiting & Irwin attorneysWhen a loved one faces declining health, many families begin to discuss the possibility of that person entering a Los Angeles area nursing home. Nursing homes allow for the comfort, safety, and ongoing safety of someone who cannot continue living independent of additional care. Fortunately, the Los Angeles area has many well-reputed nursing homes to choose from. A recent article from U.S. News & World Report lists several highly rated choices.

45+ Years Serving the Inland Empire and $500 Million+ Recovered. Nursing home negligence victims should call Heiting & Irwin at (951) 682-6400 or complete a contact form as soon as possible as there are strict time limits in which to recover for your damages.

The article states that 132 out of the 463 nursing homes “in the Los Angeles, Calif., metropolitan area, received an overall rating of five stars from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.” For purposes of the article, Los Angeles metro includes the Long Beach, Santa Ana, and Santa Monica areas. Fewer than 30 percent of the area nursing homes received five stars.

If someone you love is having difficulty taking care of him or herself on a daily basis, it may be time to consider placement in a safe, caring nursing home environment. As much of a respite that a good nursing home can offer, there is that alarming statistic among the best nursing homes: the vast majority did not receive top ratings. Some nursing homes, by default, do not respect the health and well being of its members. According to some statistics from the state’s Bureau of Medical Fraud and Elder Abuse (BMFEA) deficiencies in care were prevalent in two-thirds of nursing homes from 2001 to 2005. Even more shocking, 18 percent of complaints received were reported for outright mistreatment or abuse.

Nursing home abuse and elder abuse in the Los Angeles area are unfortunate realities. The nursing homes that engage in abusive behavior not only betray the families’ trust, but also violate California law.

If you have concerns about nursing home abuse, you should know you are not alone. The state has created task forces like the BMFEA to help with holding abusers accountable. You should also know that your legal remedies are not fully exhausted by these administrative remedies. Please reach out and speak with a qualified attorney at Heiting & Irwin for more information.
