James Otto Heiting, President 2005-2006

The Board of Governors runs the California State Bar, which oversees over 220,000 attorneys in California. Elected for a three-year term in November of 2002, managing partner James Heiting represented District Six (San Bernardino, Riverside San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties), before being elected President of the State Bar of California.

In his capacity on the Board of Governors, Mr. Heiting served as

  • Appointed by California Supreme Court Chief Justice to the Supreme Court’s State Bar Court Judge Evaluation and Nomination Committee (2004-2006)

  • Chair of the Morrison Lecture Committee Foundation (2005-2006)

  • Foundation of the State Bar of California, Board of Directors (2005-2006)

  • Ex-Officio Member of American Law Institute (2005-2006)

  • Task Force on Lawyer Support for Legal Services-Large Firm Outreach Team member (AB 2301) (2007)

  • Appointed by California Supreme Court Chief Justice to Advisory Commission on “Brown vs. Board of Education”(2003)

Mr. Heiting was elected to head the State Bar as its president for the year 2005-2006. He remains involved in statewide and local concerns focused on the courts and access to justice, as well as other legal issues.
