Heiting & Irwin Attorneys At Law Office Manager Cindy Heiting and RCLA Educating Local Youth
07-January-2014 –(Riverside, CA) – According to a recent article from The Press-Enterprise [http://www.pe.com/], the recognition of the judicial branch’s role in government among schoolchildren is extremely low. A Civic Report Card released by the National Assessment of Educational Progress showed that, in 2010, only 22 percent of eighth-graders could identify the Supreme Court’s role in our government.
California only requires a single course in civics—American government in 12th grade—for a high school diploma.
The Riverside County Law Alliance has been working to educate local youth in the role and importance of the judicial branch for more than 44 years. The organization conducts field trips for sixth graders, which includes an introduction to the legal process, a trip to the Riverside County Bar Association’s [http://riversidecountybar.com/] Gabbert Gallery, a mock trial, and a courthouse tour where they see live proceedings and meet with a judge.
Cindy Heiting, former president of the Law Alliance, wife of former state bar president James Heiting, and office manager of Heiting & Irwin Attorneys At Law [/], actively promotes increased participation by interested citizens in the educational process.
Heiting recently spoke with the Riverside County Bar Association on the issue, citing the Law Alliance’s long history in the local legal community, its goals, and how its history ties into current efforts.
“More volunteers will mean more field trips and more education, which will lead to a better community for all of us,” Heiting told The Press-Enterprise.
The RCLA is one of the few remaining organizations in California that aim to educate local youth on the importance and role of the judicial system. For more information about the organization, or to volunteer, contact Heiting at (951) 682-6400.
